Why can’t it be at the rear? (No, I don’t mean back-loaded horn.) And why not double horn, both front and rear?” That’s the birth of the Meta-Horn Project. It is not meant to defy anything that has been well tested and proven, as in the Klipsch and the Avant-Garde horn speakers. It’s just my humble, small scale study to probe into the unknown territories in horn speaker design. The project will track the various stages of building up a horn speaker with the same full-range driver, and compare the acoustic performance of the different configurations. 1. Open baffle: To gauge the basic performance of the naked driver. 2. Ported tube: The same driver mounted in a cylindrical tube with bass-reflex port at the rear. 3. Front horn: Keeping the bass-reflex port, a dome-shape horn is added to the front of the enclosure. 4. Rear horn: With the front horn and the bass-reflex port removed, a much bigger bowl-shape horn is added to the rear of the tubular enclosure. 5. Double horn: Combining both the front and rear horns. Driver: Aiyima 3” full-range / frequency response 80 to 20,000 Hz Cylindrical tube enclosure: diameter 4.5” / length 15” Dome-shape front horn: diameter 9” / depth 4” Bowl-shape rear horn: diameter 14” / depth 5” Playback soundtrack recorded with Pixel 6a.
