Wide of briefing 6. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Nasser Kanaani, spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry: "Regarding swapping prisoners (with the United States), the Islamic Republic of Iran has been serious in its effort to free its citizens and at some points we even reached an agreement (with America). But the process has been prolonged due to the lack of will by the U.S. government, unfortunately." 7. Kanaani leaving STORYLINE: Iran says it will not accept Sweden's new ambassador and will not send its own diplomat to Stockholm for now to protest the desecration of a copy of the Quran in the nordic country. "The Islamic republic of Iran will refrain from accepting Sweden's new ambassador and will also postpone sending a new ambassador to Sweden for now," said Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman for the country's foreign ministry. Last week, thousands marched in Tehran and other cities across the country to condemn the desecration. Student protesters pelted the Swedish Embassy building with eggs and demanded the expulsion of the Swedish ambassador. The outrage across the Muslim world come after Swedish police permitted a protest in which an Iraqi of Christian origin living in Stockholm — now a self-described atheist — threatened to burn a copy of the Quran. In the end, the man kicked and stood on the holy book outside of the Iraqi Embassy. He gave similar treatment to an Iraqi flag and to photos of Iraqi powerful Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Kanaani also blamed the United States for lack of will for a long-expected prisoner swap. Iran long has taken prisoners with Western passports or ties to use in negotiations with foreign nations. The evidence against them has never been made public. The detainees all have dual U.S.-Iranian citizenship, something Tehran does not recognize. At least three U.S. citizens named Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi and Morad Tahbaz are held by Iran.
