"Symphony No. 98" by Haydn, Reaction/Observations by Musician/Producer Original Video:    • Haydn: Symphony No. 98 (feat. Adam Fischer...   From Brian (requester) "While Haydn was living in London before returning to Vienna in 1794 to semi-retire, he wrote his last twelve symphonies in two groups of six. This is the last one from the first batch, and the first one he wrote (in 1791) after hearing the news of Mozart’s death. Haydn was close friends with Mozart and was devastated by the news of his death. This symphony is a tribute to Mozart, and, in its second movement, it’s the closest Haydn ever got to imitating another composer. Other composers often imitated Haydn, but it is unheard of for Haydn to imitate someone else. There’s also a humorous surprise in the finale to be on the lookout for. Haydn was very careful to stay in his lane despite his mastery of composition in every medium he worked in. Except for a handful from the early part of his career, Haydn didn’t write any operas or piano concerti because he recognized Mozart’s genius in these media. Also, after he moved back to Vienna in 1794, he wrote no more symphonies nor piano sonatas because Beethoven started composing in these media and was not only mastering them but was taking them to new heights, and Haydn focused on choral music and chamber music up until he fully retired from composing in 1804 due to poor health (he passed away in 1809 at the ripe (for those days) age of 77)."
