Dr. Schwartz' discusses OCD, substance abuse, and sex control issues in relation to how the brain deals with these intrusive and bothersome thoughts when you don't want them. These cravings have a brain-related aspect and how you process, understand and make decisions with the awareness of the cravings can be helpful in recovery. Dr. Schwartz uses an example from the book "Brain Lock" on a 10-year study done on the orbital frontal cortex of the brain. This study shows how a recovering addict of less than a few months, when shown a photo of a pipe or other drug-related item, the orbital frontal cortex section of their brain lights up and it can trigger that person to engage in or want to engage in drugs. Associate Research Professor of Psychiatry & author of almost 100 scientific publications in the fields of neuroscience and psychiatry & two popular books "Brain Lock" and "A Return of Innocence". He has lectured widely in the U.S., Europe and Asia. At UCLA, he made his key discovery: that a four-step cognitive behavioral therapy he pioneered is capable to changing the activity in a specific brain circuit of patients with OCD.
