Scots pine is dominant or present to a significant degree in about 50 % of the Flemish forests. In 2018, we noticed candle-wax-like resin oozing from the trunks of Scots pines in Oudsbergen (east of Flanders) and Bruges (west of Flanders). Sources from the UK, France and Germany revealed this resin was present there too. Moreover, these sources mentioned a general increase in pine mortality. In 2022, about a third of the Scots pines showed clear signs of deterioration or had died in forests in Stekene and Maasmechelen. The Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO) was assigned to conduct research into the underlying causes. In this video, Arthur De Haeck and Andries Saerens (Environment & Climate team, INBO) explain how this research is being conducted. In collaboration with: Nature & Forest Agency, Core Facility Centre for X-ray Tomography (Ghent University) and Ghent University-Woodlab.
