WhyAfrica visited Australian listed Sovereign Metals’ Kasiya Rutile and graphite project close to Lilongwe in Malawi on day 16 of this year’s WhyAfrica Road Trip. Developing Kasiya is complex, but the project is certainly one of the most exciting development prospects in Southern Africa. The mine is on track to start first production in early 2026. The same day that WhyAfrica was on site, Sovereign Metals started implementing Phase 2 (trail mining) at Kasiya after the initial trail pit was established and completed by South African based contractor Fraser Alexander. Phase 2 entails determining whether hydro-mining or dry mining will be the most efficient and effective mining method at Kasiya. Kasiya is a large-scale operation that will process soft, friable mineralisation mined from surface. The mine, which will have a strong environmental and social focus, is backed by multinational mining giant Rio Tinto. The project boasts excellent infrastructure in terms of roads and rail, with a high-quality rail line connecting the deep-water port of Nacala in Mozambique to Kasiya. The profound involvement of Rio Tinto and the incredible support by the Government of Malawi are special highlights in the development of this unique project in one of the most underdeveloped regions of the world. #whyafricaroadtrips #whyafricaroadtrips #africa #mining #exploration #rutile #malawi
