(20 Mar 1998) Spanish/Nat The Venezuelan president Rafael Caldera met his French counterpart Jacques Chirac at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Friday. Both sides said the meeting was cordial and productive. Afterwards President Caldera spoke out against the U-S embargo on Cuba and showed his support for the moves made by President Clinton to ease the sanctions. Caldera, the longest serving democratically elected leader in Latin America, met with the French President on Friday to discuss a range of issues affecting both countries. Both Presidents were said to be keen to set an agenda which would forge closer links between the two countries. Chirac complemented Caldera on his efforts on health reform in Venezuela. He also showed support for the development of the country and encouraged the involvement of French companies in the privatisation process. After the meeting Caldera expressed his feelings on the U-S sanctions against Cuba and on the easing of some of those sanctions announced by the Clinton administration on Friday. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We have always been against the policy of the embargo - we say that embargoes never lead to anything positive - it works against government and is damaging for the people. I think that it is very sensible that a climate is being created in the United States which will lead to the reform of this policy" SUPER CAPTION: Rafael Caldera, President of Venezuela The easing of the sanctions announced on Friday by U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright allows for direct humanitarian flights from the U-S to Cuba. Under the new rules, Cuban exiles will also be able to send cash back to relatives living on the island.
