A few kilometers south of the end of the Otter Trail lies one of the most rugged and beautiful stretches of coastline in all of South Africa. Last December, during a visit to Nature's Valley, myself, Jonathan and Simon hiked from Nature's Valley to the Keurbooms River in Plettenberg Bay, along this uniquely epic trail. The path begins tamely enough, following the popular route to the Salt River Mouth. After crossing the river, it climbs a steep bank into lush indigenous forest, before emerging onto the rocky coastline. From this point onwards, we navigated an obstacle course of jagged rocks and steep cliff edges, before eventually finding ourselves at the cave. After a quick dip in the adjacent rock pool, we climbed around the face of the rock, and into the cave itself. High swell and windy conditions made this section particularly treacherous, but we made it through with only a few bumps and scrapes. From then on, we followed the coastline across high ridges, rugged rocky shorelines and pebble beaches, through patches of lighting and heavy rain, until we found ourselves in the arches park. We made our way across long stretches of perfect, empty beach, beneath towering red cliffs and deep green jungle, before finally emerging in Keurbooms. This is a challenging route, and should only be attempted when the conditions are right, and the tide is low. It is, however, equally rewarding, and provides a first class tour through a truly stunning and undertravelled part of the Garden Route.
