What happens when liquid mercury turns into solid shapes? In this experiment, we cool mercury below its freezing point and pour it into different molds to create solid metallic shapes like a star, leaf, flower, and heart. Once the mercury warms up again, the solid shapes melt back into liquid mercury, creating a fascinating transformation. Mercury is the only metal that stays liquid at room temperature, but when cooled below −39 °C, it becomes solid. This allows us to briefly shape it into molds before it melts again. In this video you’ll see: • Liquid mercury freezing into solid molds • Shiny metallic shapes made from mercury • Solid mercury melting back into liquid • A visually striking phase change experiment This experiment demonstrates an important concept in science called a phase change, where a material transitions between solid and liquid states. ⚠️ Safety note: Mercury is a toxic metal and should only be handled with proper precautions and ventilation.
