Well I’m happy to let you know that they will breed or more accurately spawn, but this DOES depend on the conditions that your pond provides to your fish. First off to clear up any confusion between breeding and spawning. It would be accurate to say that you’ve a koi breeder because you’re the one who set up the pond providing a good environment, strong plants & added healthy fish able to spawn. The term spawning means conception outside of the body, meaning the female koi lays the eggs and then the male koi comes by and spreads the sperm over the eggs. Koi spawning usually occurs in the spring when the water temperature reaches 65 - 70 degrees fahrenheit (or 18 – 21˚C). To prepare for spawning, koi need a suitable environment that provides them with enough space, oxygen, and food. I have a waterfall in my pond which helps to aerate the water and provide extra oxygen to the environment. The koi also need plants or other hanging material where they can attach their eggs. Some examples of this in my pond are; plants such as Hyacinth, Water lettuce, and the string algae on the side of the pond. When koi are ready to spawn, the males will chase and nudge the females to stimulate them to release their eggs. The first indication that spawning had started was that the entire stone path around the pond was wet from all the splashing. This process can go on for hours and can be tough on the females. The water can foam up quite a bit from all the agitation going on. The females can lay thousands of eggs at a time, depending on their size and age. The males will then release their sperm over the eggs to fertilize them. The fertilized eggs stick to the plants and hatch usually within 3 to 7 days. The newly hatched fry are very small and vulnerable to being eaten by the fish in the pond. Therefore, they need protection if you’re hoping to keep them until they grow larger and stronger. One way to do this is to separate them from the adult koi in a separate tank or pond. I tried this with success last year. I’ll leave a link up above if you’re interested in seeing how I did this. Koi spawning is a neat and rewarding experience for pond owners and koi breeders. However, it does require some planning, preparation, and commitment to ensure your pond will provide a successful environment and survival of the koi offspring.
