Nigeria’s health inflation has climbed to 30.35% in January 2026, more than double the headline inflation rate of 15.10%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The health index has risen sharply year-on-year, reflecting higher costs of medicines, hospital services, and clinical care, with some essential drugs increasing by 30% to 100%. Despite policy interventions, including President Bola Tinubu’s 2024 executive order aimed at lowering drug prices, households are facing mounting pressure as foreign exchange volatility, import dependence, energy costs and supply chain inefficiencies continue to drive prices upward. In this conversation, Samuel Oyekanmi examines why health inflation has diverged from headline inflation, whether short-term relief is feasible, and what structural reforms could stabilise pharmaceutical pricing and healthcare delivery.
