This video is the start of another HUGE chapter—the chapter on Tagalog VERBS. Tagalog verbs are quite interesting. They are built differently compared to other languages like English and Spanish. Unlike English and Spanish, Tagalog verbs are not conjugated based on the subject of the sentence. Tagalog verbs are similar to Japanese in that they have one conjugated form regardless of the subject or the pronoun. In this video, I will start using the Tagalog Verb Table to aide our discussion in understanding how Tagalog verbs work. This will be handy in our system of learning Tagalog verbs summarized into these four things: • Tagalog verbs start with Root Words (salitang ugat) or “base word” • Combining Root Word with Affixes create verbs. Affixes can be a prefix, suffix or infix. This combination produce the infinite form and imperative form of a Tagalog verb • Tagalog verbs are conjugated according to Aspects and not tenses. Aspects point out to what is going on with the verb (the progressiveness of the action) as opposed to tenses that is points out to the timeline when an action is playing out. • Tagalog verbs behave according to the Focus System (which, some linguists refer to “trigger system” or “voice system”). This is a system where the verb is hardwired to include references to “who is talking”, “who is the action for”, “what is the action for”, etc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIME STAMPS 00:00 Introducing Tagalog verbs 00:55 Tagalog verbs are unique 02:51 Compared to English verbs 03:35 Unravelling the mystery of Tagalog verbs 04:07 The Tagalog verb table 04:34 Tagalog verbs start with Root Words 05:10 Root Words combine with Affixes 06:29 Conjugation using Aspects 10:05 The focus system 11:52 Four things to remember about verbs 12:23 Actor Focus and Object Focus 12:39 Final tips 13:24 Extro ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PREVIOUS VIDEO Episode 63: How Tagalog Words are Created • How Tagalog Words are Created (E63) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a ton of reasons to start learning Tagalog now!
