The Goods and Services Tax (GST) system in India was simplified in September 2025. Under the new structure, most items are grouped into just four slabs – 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%. The 0% GST slab, also called the nil-rated category, covers certain essential goods and services that the government wants to keep affordable. These items are still considered taxable supplies, but they attract no tax, and in many cases, input tax credit is available to businesses. A number of daily food products have been placed under the 0% slab. Items like UHT milk, Indian breads such as roti, chapati, paratha and parotta, as well as paneer, pizza bread and khakhra, are all covered. The idea is to reduce the tax burden on household staples so that consumers pay less for everyday essentials. Also, by removing tax on these life-saving medicines, the government aims to make treatment more accessible to patients who already face high medical costs. Educational items have also been included in the zero-rated list. Exercise books, lab notebooks, graph books, erasers, pencil sharpeners, maps, atlases and globes are now free of GST. This is expected to lower expenses for students and schools and encourage access to learning material. Overall, the 0% GST slab ensures that essential food, healthcare and educational items remain affordable. It reduces the tax burden on consumers while still allowing businesses to claim benefits under the GST system. This balance helps households save money while keeping the tax system simple and fair.
