Date filmed: 16/07/2021 Video filmed at 11:02 Route: Esk Valley Line Between Middlesbrough and James Cook Stations Location: Cargo Fleet Road, Middlesbrough Trains: Class 156 (Northern) - 2:30 Newcastle ➡ Nunthorpe A pedestrianised level crossing located within Middlesbrough. It is the closest level crossing to Middlesbrough City Centre, and it was previously a level crossing also used by road vehicles until the main A66 bypass, which runs over a flyover just behind the camera view, was constructed, and this level crossing has now been partially fenced-off and left solely for use by pedestrians, connecting a small retail park through a pedestrian underpass with an industrial area. Interestingly, all four barriers and wigwags (warning lights) remain operational at this level crossing, even though around half of the level crossing is fenced off and has been since the road was cut off by the A66, and this is rather unlike other pedestrianised foot level crossings like this which have been adjusted to only work for the remaining footway over them (e.g. Uttoxeter Pinfold Street, Sherburn-in-Elmet, Manor Way etc.), as neither of the barriers covering the remaining footway have been trimmed to size, nor has the fence on each side been modified to fit each barrier and prevent pedestrians from straying onto the level crossing with the barriers lowered for trains. As a result, a rather large gap separates the white fences on each side from the barriers, and the two other barriers have thus been kept. The barriers here were GWE barriers, which are becoming increasingly hard to find on the mainlines due to their age, as these date back around 45-50 years now. These have been replaced as of the time since filming. Each of the alarms at this level crossing is rather quiet, and cannot really be heard that well over the traffic noise of the A66 when approaching this level crossing. One of these alarms is located quite a way away from the footway over this level crossing in addition to this. In this video, a class 156 is seen passing for Nunthorpe in a livery which marks 100 years of the Royal Air Force. This was the only train and lowering I filmed here, as I didn't want to be around here for too much longer as the surroundings to this level crossing in particular seemed rather dodgy. The barriers have since been renewed. Thanks for watching!
