My heart skips a beat when titles of papers like this come out, but then after reading it, I'm reminded why I am a clinician & not a researcher. Yes, pelvic floor muscle training has level 1 evidence Yes, we should make sure that a lifting population has an opportunity for exposure to see what the impact of this intervention is. The results say it all- meh to nah, & yes, it was only a pilot study. Most clinicians could've predicted this outcome. Those working with power & weight lifters likely wouldn't have even considered a sole intervention of PFMT for leaking with lifting. Here's where I don't envy the researcher & where it's way easier to be the clinician. How do you quantify & code every single thing that we do as clinicians, from how we look at a lift's technique, breath & pressure management strategy? How we consider their lift prep (with or without belt)? How we consider any other life factors or stressors ALL in addition to considering their general MSK health, assessment of the pelvic floor function, past medical history... AND quantify our experience as clinicians, professionals & our own unique experience as lifters & athletes? Doing this research has value to establish a foundation that doesn't exist. It's thankless work & although it doesn't seem exciting now, it will be what the future of pelvic floor physio working with lifters will be built upon. It ain't sexy, but it's necessary. So thank you researchers for doing the work that many of us could never do (& if you could speed it up a little to get to the fun stuff that we're playing with in our clinics & gyms that would be awesome 'cause we have A LOT of questions & we're out here winging it as best we can!)
