The Goedverwacht Museum was created in 2000 in "Die Watermeul" building built in 1893. Exhibits were donated by families in this village and displays artefacts from traditional living rooms, the kitchen and bedrooms, old letters, photographs and décor. The now restored Watermeul is the only watermill in South Africa that commercially produces stone-ground flour again since 1945. You will also find the Cobblers Shop in this building, that after 47 years produces hand made, custom fitted footwear and leather goods, made to order. In 2020 Goedverwacht was identified as one of 5 selected national tourism niche destinations with extraordinary culture, history and traditions. In 2021 Goedverwacht were the winners of the West Coast Responsible Tourism Competition. The hamlet of Goedverwacht, a 90 minute drive up west from Cape Town is a living museum village where Khoi San people first lived. The freed slaves inherited the land. It was established in 1889 as a Moravian Mission stationThe Moravian Church bought the farm and has been the custodian here since 1889.
