Allegro moderato OVERVIEW Franz Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 17 in D major, D.850 is one of his most expansive and life-affirming piano sonatas. Often associated with a feeling of openness and energy, the work radiates confidence and physical vitality. At the same time, beneath its bright surface lies Schubert’s characteristic depth, where lyricism and introspection coexist with exuberance. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Schubert composed the sonata in 1825, during a relatively happy and productive period of his life. That year he traveled through Upper Austria with the baritone Johann Michael Vogl, enjoying both artistic success and personal freedom. This sense of movement and discovery is often felt in the music itself. D.850 belongs to a group of large-scale sonatas from the mid-1820s in which Schubert significantly expanded the dimensions of the piano sonata, both in length and expressive range. MUSICAL SIGNIFICANCE D.850 is significant because it shows Schubert redefining the piano sonata on his own terms. Rather than following Beethoven’s model of dramatic conflict and resolution, Schubert builds large structures from repetition, harmonic exploration, and melodic expansion. The sonata demonstrates how sustained lyricism and rhythmic drive can coexist within a monumental form, paving the way for later Romantic composers. LEGACY Today, D.850 is regarded as one of Schubert’s great piano sonatas and a cornerstone of the Romantic piano repertoire. Pianists value it for its physicality, breadth, and emotional richness, while listeners are drawn to its sense of journey and openness. The sonata stands as a powerful expression of Schubert’s mature voice, combining joy, struggle, and lyric beauty in a uniquely Schubertian way. • J.S.Bach's Masterpieces • J.S.Bach - 6 Cello Suites • D.Scarlatti - Keyboard Sonatas • W.
