The Lost City Walking Track in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area is easily the most unusual place that we have ever visited. At first glance at the Lost City lookout we were transported into abandoned ancient ruins of pagodas. But these are not real pagodas, they are actually formed by ancient rocks and layered by ironstone banding probably in millions of years. The walking track starts from the newly built carpark located 5km from Lithgow town centre. It is a short drive on gravel road to reach the carpark and there’s a toilet and an information board situated in the carpark. The distance from the south side of the Lost City to the north is approximately 3km one way. The track is clearly sign posted and has many well constructed sand stone stairs. On our way back, we took the Miners Pass link track which is steeper and more challenging. Along the tracks we did a few Marangaroo Creek crossings and walk past two heritage dams built in the 1920s. The dams supplied water to the residents in Lithgow until 1980s. We also walked through a small bushland that is filled with singing birds, yellow-flowering wattles, sweet pink boronias, ferns, and speedwell plants. The views from the north side of the Lost City is equally magnificent like the south. It is surrounded by many rock formations of pagodas that are up close and some that we could even climbed to the top. We were truly in awe looking at all these amazing and unique rock formations.
