Initially it was called Casale San Giorgio (in honor of the patron saint), then Casale Rotondo, later Luogorotondo ("rounded site") and only in 1834 was it called Locorotondo. The toponym recalls the characteristic shape of the historic center, a set of small white houses arranged in concentric rings. Another hypothesis derives the name from the late Latin Locus Rotundus, round place. 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 The birth of the municipality of Locorotondo dates back to around the year 1000; located in ancient times at the foot of the hill, later at the top, Locorotondo was enlarged after a miracle by St. George the Martyr, so the devotion of the people had a chapel built for the saint, who towards the beginning of the 17th century was proclaimed patron of the town. After the Napoleonic period, the people needed a new larger church, so above the rubble of the chapel of San Giorgio the majestic mother church was built by the will of the lord benefactor Vitantonio Montanaro, also dedicated to the Patron Saint and to the Madonna della Greca. The great devotion of San Rocco is due to the fact that the saint freed the people from the plague. In 1782....
