On your discharge from the surgery center, you will be given medicines to ensure the healing process is as efficient as possible. Take your medicines as instructed. You should not blow your nose hard or sniff excessively until we have seen you in the clinic, as this may start a brisk nose bleed from the raw areas inside your nose. It is not uncommon for you to have some mild bleed in your nose for a few days after the operation. This is normal. Many patients who have similar operation may feel well the day after the operation, but feel less well for the next 5 days. You may take some Panadol for a few days to make yourself more comfortable. The lining of the nose is always bruised and swollen after the operation, and so you will feel blocked. Blowing your nose will not clear it. For the next 2 weeks, you should avoid: alcohol and smoking, contact with people who have colds or similar infections, dust smoke or other irritants. Sunbathe, or take hot steamy baths, scratching or blowing your nose. Do not sneeze through your nose. Instead, open your mouth while sneezing. Do not blow your nose for the next one week. Do not swim for 3 weeks. All food and drinks should be cooled, and not hot nor steamy. You may experience an increase in mucus production after the operation, but it will settle in about 2 weeks to a month's time. A small number of patients may encounter some foul smell coming from their nostrils. Please do not be alarmed as the smell would eventually disappear. Blood tinged nasal discharge is normal. If excessive bleeding happens, please contact our clinic. Should you experience excessive nose bleeding after clinic hours, please head to Mt Elizabeth Hospital Accident & Emergency Department.
