So, let me tell you all about the flat periwinkle. The flat periwinkle is a common sight on most shores around the UK. They can be easily identified by their different color variations, such as orange, yellow, brown and olive green. Flat periwinkles live on the lower parts of the shore, often found amongst different seaweed species such as bladder wrack and serrated wrack. They feed on the seaweed that they live on, which is why you’ll almost exclusively find them on seaweed fronds. There are actually two different species of flat periwinkle but it is usually impossible to identify them without dissecting them. These periwinkles are able seal themselves into their shell by closing a door known as an operculum, to protect themselves from the large amount of predators present on the rocky shore. This species is relatively common around the UK, only being absent on a few stretches of coastline on the east coasts of England and Scotland. Flat periwinkles can breed throughout the year and have both male and female forms. Eggs are internally fertilised and laid on seaweed in masses of up to 280 eggs!
