On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at approximately 9:41:55 PM, a 1976 Cessna T210M Turbo Centurion – piloted by Chester Wojnicki, 75, of Mount Prospect, Illinois – crashed with townhouses with addresses 820-834 Swallow Street at the Park West subdivision in unincorporated Deerfield, Illinois, during its landing approach for Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) in Wheeling, Illinois. The Cessna crashed during an approximately one hour flight from Necedah Airport (DAF) in Necedah, Wisconsin, to Chicago Executive Airport. There was heavy fog affecting the northern Illinois area at the time, with visibility reported at around one mile when the crash occurred. Chicago Executive's air traffic control (ATC) tower was in contact with the Cessna as it entered Lake County, Illinois. At around 9:40:00 PM, the air traffic controller first warned Wojnicki to "check your altitude immediately" and double check his altimeter setting when he was over the Vernon Hills area. Flight tracking data from ADS-B Exchange showed he was around 1,000 feet. ATC warned Wojnicki again to check his altitude levels at around 9:40:30 PM, instructing him to climb and increase altitude. As the Cessna was over the Buffalo Grove area, it slightly veered off course to the west of Chicago Executive Airport's runway at around 9:41 PM. At around 9:41:40 PM, ATC warned Wojnicki that he appeared "slightly west of course" and told him his altitude was 800 feet and decreasing to 700 feet. He was approximately 2.5 miles away from the runway. At around 9:41:55 PM, the Cessna crashed and hit multiple townhouses at 820-834 Swallow Street. It came to a rest in the yard behind 820 and 822 Swallow Street. After losing contact and visual with the Cessna, ATC called emergency services. At around the same time, multiple people on the ground began calling 911 to report the plane crash. The Lake County Sheriff's Office, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, and several other assisting police and fire departments were dispatched to the scene at around 9:44 PM. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Engine 52 arrived in around six minutes and was the first fire unit on scene. Sheriff's deputies and firefighter/medics found the Cessna with heavy damage in the backyard of 820 and 822 Swallow Street. Crews confirmed that Wojnicki was the sole occupant of the Cessna. The Cessna did not catch on fire. He was reportedly trapped in the wreckage and firefighter/medics pronounced him dead at the scene. No injuries were reported from anyone on the ground. Multiple townhouse units, including 830 Swallow Street, sustained minor exterior damage from the Cessna. Two gas meters were also damaged, which caused a gas leak, prompting technicians from North Shore Gas to respond to the scene. The townhouse units affected remain habitable. "Fortunately, it appears the pilot was able to avoid causing major damage to any of the homes and nobody on the ground sustained injuries," Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said in a press release. The Lake County Coroner's Office responded to the scene to take possession of Wojnicki. An autopsy was conducted the next day on Thursday, March 5, 2026, with preliminary results showing Wojnicki died from blunt force injuries in the crash. The area was taped off while investigators with the Lake County Sheriff's Technical Crash Investigation Unit began an initial investigation. Local authorities notified relevant federal agencies, like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). They arrived the following morning and began an on-scene investigation. As of the time of this video upload, the plane crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Lake County Coroner's Office, FAA, and NTSB.
