Tuning: A-D-G-C-F Artist: Obituary Bassist: Frank Watkins Album: World Demise (1994) Song: Don't Care Bass: Ibanez SR675-SKF I've played that over a bassless track, so you are only hearing my bass in this video. Obituary was the first death metal band I ever heard, and this song opened Pandora's box. From then on, they became one of my favorite bands, and death metal captivated me. Based on groove and heavy rhythms, rather than speed and technicality, Obituary created their own simple and effective death metal style. They have a crushing rhythm section, guitars with a rotten sound, and great creativity in their solos. But above all, there's John Tardy's voice. Those growls, that dragging at the ends of words that finish in a wail, are inimitable. It's unique in its genre, and that's what makes Obituary a cult band. "World Demise" features the opening track, "Don't Care." For this album, they slowed the tempo and increased the number of headbanging riffs. John Tardy delivers a vocal performance unlike any he's ever given. The song's unusual riffs are simple yet possess an atypical rhythm, as if they were aiming for groove but falling short.
