Hidden in the countryside near Mold, Flintshire, North Wales, this striking stone structure is known as The Tower, or Broncoed Tower. Seen from above, it looks like a small castle — but its history is far more interesting. Originally built around 1440–1450, The Tower began life as a fortified border house, a defended home rather than a true medieval castle. It dates from a turbulent period of Welsh–English border conflict, when landowners needed protection but not full-scale fortifications. Over the centuries, the building was expanded and remodelled. During the 18th and 19th centuries, owners added Gothic Revival features such as battlements and decorative openings that resemble arrow slits. While these details look medieval, many were symbolic — designed to romanticise the past rather than serve a military function. Today, The Tower is a Grade I listed building, recognised as being of exceptional historical importance, and remains privately owned. Standing alone in open fields, it feels like a forgotten landmark — a structure shaped by centuries of changing history, taste, and purpose. This drone footage captures the site as it stands today: quiet, isolated, and layered with history. #Welshhistory, #NorthWalesruins, #BroncoedTower, #TheTowerNercwys, #MolWdales, #hiddenhistoryUK, #medievalWales, #fortifiedhouse, #GothicRevivalarchitecture, #dronefootageWales, #historicbuildingsUK
