TREATING EARLY GASTRIC CANCER THROUGH ENDOSCOPIC RESECTION SHOWS GOOD RESULTS

It has been announced that the majority of stomach cancer cases identified through routine health screenings are mostly in their early stage. AMC's Health Screening & Promotion Center has released the results of an analysis, showing that there's a high probability of early gastric cancer lesions being completely removed without surgery(, using only an endoscopic procedure). A team led by Dr. Hye-Sook Chang and Dr. Ji Young Choi (of the Health Screening & Promotion Center) has released the results of an analysis of patients who underwent gastroscopy at AMC's Health Promotion Center. Out of nearly forty-two thousand patients in the analysis, 84 were found to have stomach cancer, and among these, 74 cases, around 88%, were in the early stage. The remaining 10 patients had advanced gastric cancer. Nine out of ten patients newly diagnosed with early gastric cancer had no symptoms before it was identified during a routine health screening. Gastric cancer in the early stage refers to cases in which cancerous lesions are confined to localized areas in the mucosa or submucosal layer of the stomach wall. According to the data, it was possible to completely remove stomach cancer lesions in early gastric cancer patients through endoscopic resection, using gastroscopy alone without surgery. This method has the advantages of enabling a complete cure, just as if surgery had been performed, and in terms of quality of life, it allows patients to live with a normal stomach. Experts emphasize the importance of having a gastroscopy every one or two years, at least, even when no special symptoms appear and for those with risk factors for gastric cancer, it is advised to undergo gastroscopy every year.
