Never forget that knowledge is power. As a daughter, wife , employee and a woman there are rights set in place to protect you. 10 BASIC LAWS AND RIGHTS EVERY WOMAN MUST KNOW 1. Right to claim share in property Section 6, The Hindu Succession Act 2. Paid leave of 26 weeks during and after pregnancy -Section 5 , The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 3. Women must be paid an equal amount of remuneration and no discrimination to be made during recruitment. Sec 4 & 5, Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 4. Prevention against Sexual Harassment at work place -Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 5. Woman cannot be made to work more than 7pm in a factory. Section 66, Factories Act, 1948 6. Marriage before 18 years is illegal -The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 7. Asking for dowry or dahej is illegal and punishable Section 3 & 4, The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 8. Triple Talaq is now illegal Muslim Woman (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 9. Protection from physical abuse at home by husband, live-in partner or other members of family. Domestic Violence Act, 2005 10. Commission of Woman for protecting rights of women across the country. National Commission for Women Act, 1990 AND THE MOST OBVIOUS ONE ... Whatever may be the reason, No woman can be arrested or called to a police station before 6am or after 6pm. A woman can be arrested only by a woman constable/officer. ONLY in exceptional cases a woman can be ARRESTED by a male officer if there is a written & signed ORDER by a MAGISTRATE. We must understand it is important to know the law. Only if you are aware of your rights can you fight against any injustice meted out to you at home, at the workplace, or in the society.
