Viewing the Cottonera Lines fortifications using Google Earth Studio. The Cottonera Lines were grand defensive constructions of their time, over 4 km of total length & erected to protect the cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua . Together with the older Santa Margherita Lines, they made a double belt of powerful walls, bastions and gates, protecting the Three cities and the Grand Harbour of Malta. Five kilometres of massive ramparts was originally planned by famous military engineer Antonio Valperga and approved by Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner. Works started in August 1670, but for lack of funding it lasted almost 100 years. The enormous planned ditch was left unfinished and the proposed eight cavaliers inside it were never built. During the early 1800's, the constructions were modified when some trenches, batteries and redoubts were added, but in the 1870's, the western part of the defensive constructions was completely destroyed to make way for expansion of the port harbour. Nowadays, Cottonera Lines lay severely neglected, having not seen any of the fortification restoration works that Mdina, Birgu & Valletta have recently enjoyed. https://clic.ly/beenz75
