It is clear that we are in the midst of a revolution in programming, whatever you think about AI’s writing code, even if their development stops today, they will still change how programming works for good. We will learn new and better ways to work with them and adapt to use them more effectively. It seems that there are some problems. It’s currently a bit of a wild west as we find ourselves, and our ideas, challenged by this new technology. Inevitably, there’s a lot of naive nonsense and hype being spouted, and claims being made by people trying to make a buck. Right now, it is not obvious how best to use these powerful tools and to understand what value they can add. There are good reasons why Programming Languages have evolved to exist in the form that they do, and that natural languages, in important ways, represent a poor alternative. In his keynote GeeK talk from the Equal Experts Annual Conference 2025, Dave Farley explores what the future brings and what the future of programming looks like. Dave Farley is a pioneer of Continuous Delivery, a thought leader and an expert practitioner in CD, DevOps, TDD and software design.
