Community Spotlight: Georgina's 10-year UTI battle with Hunner's lesions Trigger Warning: This video includes references to suicidal ideation. This is the first video in our Community Spotlight series, which highlights content on other channels, created by individuals who experience recurrent and chronic UTI. Follow Georgina's journey on her own YouTube channel: / @chronicembeddeduti Georgina has lived with severe bladder pain for the past ten years, beginning in her early 40s. Despite debilitating symptoms, she was repeatedly told nothing was wrong. Dipstick tests failed to detect infection, and a standard cystoscopy appeared normal. She underwent Botox injections to the bladder — a treatment that may provide relief to some patients — but in her case, it caused excruciating pain and bleeding. She has since had to self-catheterise, while also managing a hypertonic pelvic floor, constant burning and spasms, and waking 20–30 times a night, rarely getting more than 30 minutes of uninterrupted sleep. It was only after a second cystoscopy that Georgina was diagnosed with Hunner's lesions (ulcers in the bladder) and her painful symptoms were further explained. She has since tried bladder instillations, which offered some initial relief but lost effectiveness over time. Antibiotics have at times been essential, yet have also taken a toll — disrupting her gut and vaginal microbiome and contributing to recurring thrush and bacterial vaginosis alongside ongoing pain from embedded infection. Georgina is now planning to undergo bladder fulguration to treat the lesions, knowing they may recur, and is preparing — if necessary — for bladder removal in the hope of regaining some quality of life. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-advocacy: asking for thorough urine testing, requesting cystoscopy with hydrodistension when appropriate, and continuing to push for answers, diagnosis, and proper treatment. It also highlights that the diagnosis a patient receives can depend on the clinician they consult with, and that diagnosis may lead to very different treatment recommendations.
