🔊🎶 Scenes from an afternoon and evening stroll around the city of #Caen (pronounced “cahn”) on a partly cloudy-turned-rainy day. I started sightseeing with the imposing #ChateauCaen, former fortress of #WilliamTheConqueror from 1060, which is mostly under major renovations today. It’s home of the historical Musée de Normandie and views of the city from its ramparts. From there I wandered—basically to keep myself occupied to beat jet lag—beyond the historic Maison des Quatrans and the Louis XIV statue in Place Saint-Sauveur, and onto the old Hotel de Ville, juxtaposed to the Abbaye aux Hommes and its Église de St-Étienne—where lies the tomb of the aforementioned conquering William. Near the Gothic Église de St-Pierre, I dined at #Michelin-recommended Le Bouchon du Vaugueux with an amazing first dinner in #Normandy: lamb parmentier with escargots in garlic herb butter, sea bass over a bed of seaweed risotto, and a #cheese plate of classic #fromage de Normandie (Camembert, Pont l’Évêque, Livarot).
