In the 1990s, Daewoo was one of the world's leading conglomerates, having risen from humble beginnings during the 1960s under founder Woo Choong Kim, and worked to be the prime example of the economic miracle that had turned South Korea from a war-torn agrarian society into a capitalist powerhouse that would come to be one of the most significant in the Far East. However, the meteoric rise of Daewoo was predicated on multiple fragile underpinnings that, in the event that one failed, had the potential to start a domino effect that would destroy the entire group, as was the case during the latter half of the decade, when Daewoo's fervent desire to enter the automotive market, and thereby become a flagship carbuilder for South Korea alongside the likes of Hyundai and Kia, saw Kim pour every resource in his empire into its survival, only for it to reveal the inherent weakness of the wider Daewoo brand, but also a series of accounting frauds that had helped to hide the firm's fiscal underperformance from the wider world.
