A cycle ride from Port Talbot following the Bryn Goytre Cycle Trail and old railway line to Bryn and Margam Forest on an Autumn evening in South Wales. This ride follows the old railway line that once ran from Port Talbot up into the hills to the small village of Bryn, visiting the entrance of the abandoned Cwmcerwyn Railway Tunnel and then a climb into Margam Forest to visit the beautiful Cwmwernderi Reservoir. I wasn't sure what to expect from this ride while I was planning. I was looking for one of the lesser known trails that I hadn't previously explored and knew it wouldn't be that long in distance. The trail into the hills is a nice gradient that allows you to get high up into the hills without huge effort of smaller steep sections like the road, but it also gives you an idea of how steep this would have been for the trains, especially the freight trains that would have pulled it's trailers up into the hills and returned down with a heavy load of coal. After briefly visiting the small village of Bryn I move on through some of the more over-grown industrial wasteland which contained the remains of Old Bryn Brickworks and then onto the disused tunnel, sadly not accessible. Finally I climbed the hill to reach the forest. And while it was worth the effort to struggle up through this tough grass land I would recommend anyone attempting this to find another route if visiting the forest. The forest, once past its entrance was devoid of any people. It really could have been a hundred miles from civilisation. The most amazing part of this ride was visiting Cwmwernderi Reservoir. Tucked away in the base of a valley amongst all the pine trees and traversing the heavy gravel trail down the side with autumn leaves and autumn light to match was a great experience that really made my day. I was a bit late in getting there and so I had to short cut on foot down to the reservoir as I would have had to have cycled a lot further and of course cycle back up. This meant I didn't get as much time to spend there as I'd have liked. But the sun was setting and I wanted to make sure I was able to cycle back up to the top of the forest to continue exploring a little more. I hope you enjoy this ride.
