Victoria has 123 native fern and lycophyte species, 39 of which are rare or threatened, and worldwide 16% of fern species are threatened with extinction. Despite the high proportion of threatened fern species, their ex situ conservation has lagged behind global efforts employed for seed plants. This presentation will provide a summary of the progress made to date for a new, state-funded fern spore bank project at RBGV, and the various methods that have been trialled and found to be effective in its establishment. The RBGV fern spore bank will form part of a new Victorian Cryopreservation Bank (VCB) for plants, algae and fungi that stores material at -150°C. It is hoped that the VCB may eventually be able to provide material in support of reintroduction efforts and form the basis for increasing living fern collections at RBGV, where collections of known provenance are currently lacking. https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/science/
