Maximizing student and teacher target language use at all levels

Research suggests that successful language acquisition entails finding the perfect balance between target language (TL) input (i.e., reception) and output (i.e., production). However, traditional language teaching methods often provide insufficient TL input and output opportunities, and comprehensible-input methods often provide plentiful TL input to the exclusion of output. Furthermore, teachers working in many theoretical frameworks frequently struggle to maintain consistent TL use and to elicit student TL use, especially at the basic or Novice level. In this interactive workshop, we will explore strategies to maximize input, output, and TL use. We will identify and address relevant obstacles, and we will consider activities, activity modifications, and classroom policies that have been proven effective. This language-neutral session will apply to all languages and levels.
