It is recommended to change the sand in your sand filter at least every few years. The more frequent you change it the better your filtration will be. I am replacing my sand filter today with Zeolite sand which is much more efficient at filtering your sand. While I have used sand until now and the pool stayed extremely clean, I decided to spend an extra few bucks this year and try out the Zeolite Sand.
