New beekeepers adventure in assembling the Langstroth Hive Body from Mann Lake. I ordered the Unassembled Complete Hive Kit from Mann Lake so that I would be able to see the hive parts up close. I wanted to touch all of the parts, to measure them, and see how they go together. Here are a few comments about the product. The hive went together well. The corners fit together easily. One of the inside surfaces had a 1 inch spot where the wood was chipped off. 2 of the pre-drilled nail holes were not perpendicular to the surface of the wood and had to be re-drilled. Several the nails provided in the kit were already bent. I bent some myself. There were enough extra that it did not matter. When buying a kit you know that the quality of the resulting product depends partially on the skills of the person doing the assembly. I am happy with the resulting product. Questions 1. Should I use a wood filler to fill all of the external gaps between the fingers? 2. Should the corners on the inside be sealed in some way? or should this be left up to the bees. 3. Should I fill in the chip in the surface of the wood on the inside? I am really happy to see the parts of my hive coming together. There is still lots more work to do. Fill cracks and weather proof the outside. (Prime and paint, or seal in some other way.)
