Top wellbeing advice from the RHS Home of Gardening Science with Head of Science Alistair Griffiths

You don’t need a garden to feel and experience the health benefits of gardening and having plants nearby and just by including a few plants in a bare front garden could reduce your stress levels as much as eight weekly mindfulness sessions! If you don’t have a garden then you use indoor plants and lighting to create large shadows and jungle atmosphere in your own home.... like Director of Science and Collections at the RHS Alistair Griffiths does at home. At work, Alistair has several spider plants, a fig tree and a peace lily all on or close to his desk at the Home of Gardening Science at RHS Wisley near London. Let’s reinforce this point; gardening and being around plants is one of the best stress busters and happiness creators and it is so accessible! You can put plants on your desk and your wellbeing is likely to improve. The world’s chief scientists are and have been for years continually proving this to be the brilliant truth. Alistair is one such scientist that I had the pleasure of speaking to on our podcast this week. He first and foremost, a biological scientist, now focused on how we keep the population healthy through gardening and nature connection. He is the Director of Science and Collections for The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). This team undertakes scientific research, and care for the unique, word-class RHS herbarium and Lindley Library collections. His team provides high-quality, evidence-based advice on horticultural and gardening science to improve the environment and human wellbeing. The team also consists of a world class advisory and information team that help translate gardening science into practice. Prior to working at the RHS, he spent 5 transformative years working at the Eden Project in Cornwall with it’s horticultural team leader, Dr. Tony Kendall. I use the word transformative with no exaggeration here, because, during Alistair’s time on a project called ‘People and Gardens’ he experienced the eye opening world of working with a group of people to improve their wellbeing though gardening. He ended up in a pantomime playing Prince Charming! But seriously though, this was a pivotal moment in his life as he watched and studied how time spent in nature raised the state of health and happiness among his newfound friends. This led him to the RHS and to head up creating a new gardening blueprint for wellbeing project looking at the evidence of gardening and health to better understand and share how to keep the larger population well through gardening and indeed how to speak to the nation about all of this research. He and his brilliant colleagues at Universities across the country in particularly Sheffield University, have published a raft of compelling papers on the health benefits of gardening. One experiment saw the scientists adding just two planters and a tree to a front garden to bring greenery to the residents street view and resulted in a huge drop in cortisol (stress hormone). Before the experiment, only 24% of residents had healthy cortisol patterns. Over the course of the year following the plantings, this increased to 53% of residents having healthy cortisol patterns. We had a wonderful long chat and recorded a podcast in which Alistair gives us a top tip on how we can easily deepen our connection to nature. We chatted extensively on the topic of gardens and health, data driven research around heart rate variability implications on being around plants (lower stress levels), as well as the attention restoration theory. It was jammed packed with insights that we must not ignore. The more time we spend outdoors in green surroundings the more microbes we have on our arms which have the potential to increase our protection levels and boost out immunity system. Regular and responsible gardening is a vital part of a healthy life. Food, water, sleep AND NATURE. This will be one of our new mantras Food, water, sleep AND NATURE.
