A video exploring how an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant has proved to be a lifeline for a Wiltshire farm has been produced. EnviTec Biogas UK installed the plant for Stowell Farms back in September 2012 when the dairy unit needed a fresh boost. It has since become the backbone of the mixed farming estate, delivering consistent income and significant advantages in other areas of the operation. The plant produces 4,200 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity per annum with 15 per cent used to power the farm, which features a 450-strong dairy herd and 1,500 ewe flock. Organic matter produced by the plant has also improved soil health – to the benefit of around 1,800 acres of arable crops. Farm manager Gavin Davies, who is interviewed in the video, said: “When I arrived at the business in 2007 the dairy unit was on its last legs, so we looked at ways we could take it forward. “We looked at slurry storage and that’s when I was introduced to the idea of AD. “We investigated it and felt it was the right thing for us, especially because we grow the crops needed for it.” The plant, still running as efficiently as it was four years ago, is fed with a mix of feedstock and slurry from the dairy unit with outputs at an average of more than 95 per cent. He added: “We originally expected the return on investment to be seven years, but over the last four the output of the plant has exceeded expectations. “Together with the profits and other advantages it creates, our ROI has been increased from initial estimates. “The project has been very successful and we’d certainly do the same again.” Mr Davies added: “We’ve had a really good relationship with EnviTec Biogas UK throughout the time we’ve been running the plant. “The service engineers carry out our routine maintenance and we can phone them for minor issues, so we’ve got that support as well as the biological service too.” Mike McLaughlin, managing director of EnviTec Biogas UK, said: “This project is a testament to the quality of the plant, it’s output and the service team which support it, as well as Gavin’s commitment to operate it to the best of its capacity.”
