Various of tents with smoke rising from Rafah in background STORYLINE: Palestinians taking refuge in northern Rafah once again picked up their few belongings on Wednesday, fleeing constant Israeli artillery shelling around their makeshift tent camp. One resident of the small tent encampment said artillery shelling was falling around them at all times, but that things get harder at night. "Nowhere is safe. Every other day we have to be displaced. Only an hour ago, they bombed just here. Every night, we can't sleep," said Ibrahim al-Zaem as he gathered his family's belongings. Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas’ October 7 attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducted about 250. Since then, Israeli ground offensives and bombardments have killed more than 37,600 people in Gaza, according to the territory's Health Ministry. Most residents of Gaza have been displaced, many of them multiple times, by the Israeli onslaught and ensuing fighting. Intensive bombings has also left Gaza's buildings, infrastructure and basic services in tatters. The bombings, as well as Israel's closure of the territory's borders, have also caused major challenges for aid delivery, distribution and provision of the most basic needs. "There is no place you can call safe. We are just looking for a place we can rest in. We really got very exhausted here," said another resident of the tent encampment, Um Hazem al-Zaem. "There is hardly any water. Brackish and salty. No one helped us here. We have been stranded here for two months and no one gave us anything," she added. Meanwhile on Thursday, the Israeli military ordered new evacuations from the Gaza City neighbourhoods that were heavily bombed and largely emptied early in the war. The latest orders apply to Shijaiyah and other neighborhoods where residents reported heavy bombing.
