Eight Short Songs With a Childish Twist arr. Tim Rowland (Grade 3)

Each of the eight movements in this challenging grade 3 suite is an arrangement of a children's song, nursery rhyme or similar melody. Defeinitely not aimed at childreen, but rather well-accomplished musicians, the arrangements are wide and varied, and mostly in styles or genres far removed from the intended original style of those melodies. Ranging from snippets of 4 insect/bug songs combined in a slower march style, to arrangements in 5/8 or 7/8, a "Count Basie" style swing and Bossa Nova, ballads/chorales and a hoedown, with some songs even being a miniature A-B-A form, they contain modern and refreshing harmonies heavily influenced by jazz, a variety of challenging rhythms, and interesting parts for everyone. Each movement could be used individually as a warm-up piece to help musicians focus on a few particular musical aspects in rehearsals, but the most pleasure comes from performing the suite in its entirety, the reactions of those attempting to recognise the songs, and appreciating the music for the completely new pieces they have become.
