In this special episode, I take a step back and critically review my own game, Red Flag Over Paris, with my friend and co-host Alexandre Fontaine-Rousseau. Rather than a celebration, this is a deep dive into what worked, what didn’t, and what I would do differently if I were designing the game today. Released in 2021 by GMT Games, Red Flag Over Paris explores the intense two-month struggle between the Communards and the Versailles government during the 1871 Paris Commune. Inspired by Fort Sumter, it’s a short but strategic card-driven game that balances political influence and military conflict. But how well does it achieve its goals? Together, Alexandre and I will break down the design choices, discuss areas for improvement, and reflect on what this experience has taught me as a designer. If you’re interested in game design, historical wargames, or just enjoy a bit of self-criticism, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. Support the show on Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/homoludens1871
