The Western Review became a tradition in the 1960s. The shows took place in the Recreation Hall, a large building which stood next to Porterfield Road , roughly on the site of the present Royal Victoria Building. The performers included nurses, junior doctors, medical students, radiographers, pharmacists, physiotherapists, porters and anyone else who could be persuaded to join in. Each show consisted of a series of sketches, written by cast members, which often poked fun at senior doctors and nurses – this remember was the era of the popular satirical shows ‘That was the Week that Was’ on TV and ‘Beyond the Fringe’. The musical numbers were usually based on the tunes of popular songs of the day with satirical lyrics written by cast members. The show took place around Christmas and usually ran for two nights.
