Born and raised in Jerusalem, Ahmad Muna attended university in England before returning to his homeland to preside over his family’s English-language bookstore in East Jerusalem. The Educational Bookshop has become a gathering place for locals and tourists alike, everyone from students to diplomats. The 35-year-old bookseller says he identifies primarily as a Palestinian and a resident of Jerusalem, but “If people want to dig more, they’ll discover I’m a Muslim, too.” This excerpt from our interview focuses on what Muna had to say about the relationship between Palestine’s Christian minority and the Muslim majority. He described a relationship of coexistence, personal friendships, and shared national aspirations — adding that nothing creates unity more than their mutual suffering under Israeli occupation. You'll hear more from Ahmad Muna in our forthcoming film, Last Christian in Bethlehem.
