My Thoughts on The Beatles Get Back

I just finished watching all 3 parts to Peter Jackson's cut of #TheBeatles #GetBack so decided to give my own #Review / reaction to the release. Support me on Patreon:   / jtcurtis   Peter Jackson, of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fame, has released a new cut of the infamous Beatles Get Back / Let it Be project. In 1969, The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, were already the reigning champs of 60s rock and roll. The band original from Liverpool had taken England by storm with their first LP Please Please Me. On this album, these 50s rock disciples brought rock & roll back to the forefront with their raw guitar driven grooves mixed with their unforgettable harmonies. They invaded America in 1964 with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" playing on the Ed Sullivan Show, and would produce three films to their name: A Hard Day's Night, Help and the animated Yellow Submarine. From 1965 to 1968, under producer George Martin, they released Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The White Album (each considered by many to be some of the finest rock albums of all time). But they had gone through hard times as well. John Lennon was under fire in 1966 for claiming The Beatles were more popular than Jesus, which led to their eventual retirement from touring. Becoming an exclusive studio band meant spending more time on more complicated arrangements, orchestrations, overdubs and studio experimentation. In the wake of manager Brian Epstein's death, the band released the lesser loved Magical Mystery Tour and set off to India on a spiritual cleansing. They would return with a number of classic tunes: "Back in the U.S.S.R." "Dear Prudence," "Blackbird" and more, but in-fighting and arguments plagued their subsequent release, The White Album. The constant presence of Yoko Ono, John's soon to be wife, was seen as an unwelcome intrusion by his bandmates. Ringo even left the band for a few days, though The White Album and single "Hey Jude / Revolution" were well received. So following this project in January of 1969, The Beatles came up with the idea to perform a live concert of brand new material and return to their rock and roll roots. They would film their rehearsals in Twickenham Studios with the aid of director Michael Lindsay-Hogg and recording engineer Glyn Johns. The band begun rehearsing songs like "I've Got a Feeling" "Don't Let me Down" "Across the Universe" and "Two of Us". Several other numbers that would appear on Abbey Road were being worked on as well. Unfortunately the vibe soon proved to be unpleasant with arguments between Paul and George proving the most infamous and John's drug-habit affecting his contributions. George Harrison, feeling stifled with a back-catalog that included All Things Must Pass and Isn't it a Pity left the band after John belittled his new contribution I Me Mine, putting the new Get Back project in jeopardy. George agreed to return to the project on the condition that it was moved to Apple Studios where they cut his acoustic blues number For You Blue. There, the environment improved, especially with the arrival of keyboardist Billy Preston, who contributed a fender rhodes solo to their soon-to-be released single Get Back. With the proper live concert scrapped, The Beatles decided to perform live on top of The Roof at Apple Studios. There they performed Get Back, Don't Let Me Down, I've Got a Feeling, One After 909 and Dig a Pony before the police came to stop their performance. On the last day's shooting they performed Two of Us, The Long and Winding Road and what would become the original 1970 film and albums' title, Let it Be. The Beatles planned to disband after recording Abbey Road, and creative control of Let it Be was passed to Phil Spector, who added much orchestration to many of the songs. Paul was dissatisfied with the end project and broke news The Beatles break up on April 10th 1970. Lindsay-Hogg original 1970 cut of the film was not well received and for decades, the project saw limited release (never officially coming out on DVD). In the 2010s, Peter Jackson was given access to the footage to compile a new cut of the film. Though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed release, the 3-part series has finally seen the light of day on Disney plus. Indeed it is the most revealing cut of all that went on in this final year of The Beatles' career.
