In the "quick hip" procedure, the joint specialist goes in between two muscles, pushing the muscles to the side but not injuring them. As a result, patients are quickly mobile and pain-free again, and the precise fit of the prostheses reduces the need for replacement operations. Professor Renkawitz has received a number of awards for his work, including the 2014 "Medicine Oscar" from the Oskar Helene Heim Foundation in Berlin - one of the most highly endowed science prizes for physicians in Germany. His team at the Orthopedic University Hospital in Heidelberg is intensively involved, both clinically and scientifically, with artificial replacements of the hip and knee joints.
