After the Bofors scandal rattled the nation in 1986, the Army did not inducted any new heavy artillery. However, back in 2017, L&T had won the Rs 4,500-crore contract to supply 100 units of K9 Vajra under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. On 18th February 2021, the L&T successfully completed the delivery of last and 100th K9 Vajra 155mm/52 calibre Tracked Self-Propelled Howitzer, which was flagged off by Army Chief General M.M. Naravane at Hazira near Surat in Gujarat. The K9 VAJRA is a variant of the K9 Thunder specially designed for operation in the desert areas. The K9 Thunder is a South Korean self-propelled 155 mm howitzer manufactured by Hanwha Defense. L&T had also signed a transfer of technology contract with Hanwha Corporation. The K9 Vajra systems were delivered with more than 80 per cent indigenous work packages and above 50 per cent indigenization (by value) at the programme level. Talking about its specification, The K9 Vajra weighs around 47tonnes with a maximum speed of 67KM/hr. Its maximum firing range is 18KMs. The main armament of K9 Vajra includes a 155mm 52 caliber gun and the secondary armament includes 12.7mm K6 HMG. The overall operational range for this howitzer is 480KMs. The K9 Vajra due to its light weight, better speed and range than main battle tanks can lead the attack in the areas heavily guarded by amours. The main battle tanks can then lead the second wave of attack to neutralize the remaining scattered amours. The L&T was able to successfully deliver the howitzer ahead of the schedule but at the same time has not received any follow-on order or new contract. As per defense experts the DRDO & L&T are under discussion to possibly convert the K9 Vajra into light/medium weight tank that could be effectively used in mountainous regions such as Ladakh. Army has already deployed 3 of its K9 Vajra at Leh for high altitude trials. While they have proven capability in desert areas, with trails at Leh can possibly pave its wave to be converted into tank. Based on the guns perform, the Indian Army will consider whether or not to place orders for two-three additional units of the self-propelled howitzers for high-altitude operations. Talking about the possible Vajra Tank, as per defense experts, the idea is to replace 155mm gun with a 105mm or 120mm gun and the chassis would remain the same which will drastically reduce its weight. With the use of weight reduction technologies, its overall weight can be further bring down by 10 tonnes. India is in dire need of such light weight tanks after learning from the recent standoff at LAC with China. =================================================== WHOMSOEVER IT MAY CONCERN Most of the pictures clip or BGM included in the Video Belongs to their Respected Owners and we do not claim rights...but under this,๐ ‘ we are using them ๐ =================================================== DISCLAIMER: UNDER SECTION 107 OF THE COPYRIGHT ACT 1976, ALLOWANCE IS MADE FOR "FAIR USE" FOR PURPOSES SUCH AS CRITICISM, COMMENT, NEWS REPORTING, TEACHING, SCHOLARSHIP, AND RESEARCH.
