BIHAR & JHARKHAND SAREES - A STORY OF WEAVING CULTURE

Let’s get to know about these different varieties of Sarees from the states of Bihar and Jharkhand. The state of Bihar is known for the sarees woven from Tussar silk . Also known as ‘Wild Silk’, it is a non-mulberry silk produced from a wide winged moth that is yellowish brown in colour and feeds on wild forest. It is a coarser variety of silk and is lot cooler, porous and breathable than other silk varieties. Another form of Tussar silk saree comes from Bhagalpur, the 'silk city' of Bihar. These sarees are known as Bhagalpuri silk sarees. Amongst the natives of these districts, Bhagalpuri silk and Tussar are synonymous words that go hand in hand.It is of exceptional quality with very unique and distinctive adaptability and flexibility. The silk used in weaving Bhagalpuri sarees is extracted from the silk threads of a special type of cocoon known as tussar cocoon. The most notable feature of these silk sarees, is in its dyeing technique using vegetable dyes. With natural weaving, subtle artwork ,rich texture and deep golden colour , the Bhagalpuri silk sarees truly represent the heritage of the region . Like Bihar, Jharkhand also produces the largest chunk of Tussar silk but a different variant .The unique thing is that the silkworm is not reared on the mulberry tree but on local trees of Jharkhand namely Sal, Arjun, and Asan trees. Their mellow golden hue with symbolic motifs woven, embroidered, or printed all over gives these sarees a mesmerizing look . Bihar is also known for the traditional Madhubani silk , cotton and cotton-silk blend Sarees. Madhubani painting is a very ancient form of folk art that originated in the Madhubani district of Bihar. Hence the name Mithila or Madhubani art. The artisans use block prints on the fabric to make remarks on the entire saree. It is a folk painting done by hand using natural colours and dyes.It is characterized by line drawings and tribal motifs accompanied with bright earthy tones and contrasting patterns. The painting narrates different aspects of nature, scenes and deity from ancient epics on the sarees. The design has a sharp finish, and miniature paintings add elegance to the piece. These sarees are considered extremely rich and ethnic. Another popular saree of Bihar is the baavan butti . As the name suggest , the saree is made of baavan or fifity two motifs . These hand-woven cotton or silk sarees use extra weft to create the motifs, running through their main body. Motifs include Buddhist iconographies such as the peepal, bull, lotus, stupa, deer and elephant. Truly an elegant masterpiece when draped. The Kuchai Silk is a local fabric that originated in Jharkhand, specifically in the Kharsawan-Kuchai and Seraikela areas. It is considered a variant of the tussar silk .It is made using cocoons grown on the Arjun and Sal trees. These Kuchai silk sarees are popular among the Jain and Buddhist women. The state of Jharkhand also produces another variant , Ghicha silk sarees which is a by-product of the Tussar silk. The sarees made of Ghicha silk gets a raw texture as the silk is manually reeled from cocoons making it uneven. The Padhiya Saree of Jharkhand features an aesthetic white base fabric with Red Paadh or Border. This has its Origin from the Oraon and Munda Tribe. Even Khadiya Tribe wear similar sarees. It is traditionally worn by women during auspicious occasions, festivals, and weddings. So saree lovers, its time for you to visualize the rich treats of the various varieties of sarees which you will witness through my eyes in my upcoming video series MY CULTURAL JOURNEY – SAREE YATRA #sareeyatra #walkalongmyculturaljourney #indiantraditionaldances #sareelove #sarees #trending Await for many more....
