How do leaders respond when the future feels unclear? In this thought-provoking NHS Confederation session, Amina explores uncertainty, leadership and choice — and why our response to uncertainty can shape whether we end up exhausted and defensive, or grounded and purposeful. Drawing on cognitive science, leadership theory, personal experience and the values at the heart of the NHS, this talk re-frames uncertainty not simply as a threat, but as a reality we can learn to navigate more wisely. Amina contrasts the “pathway of learned anxiety” with a more constructive alternative: accepting uncertainty, acting from values, and choosing solidarity over fear. This is a powerful reflection on what it means to lead through change in the NHS — not by pretending to have all the answers, but by building trust, protecting humanity and staying connected to purpose. A strong watch for anyone working in healthcare leadership, improvement, culture change or system transformation. This session was recorded at NHS IMPACT's National Improvement Conference 2026, produced in partnership with NHS Confederation and NHS Providers.
