Once again, I witnessed hundreds of Cormorants engaged in an incredible display of group foraging, sweeping across the lake together in perfectly timed, coordinated waves. Along the shoreline, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, and Great Blue Heron stood patiently poised, watching intently for escaping fish. Nearby, more cormorants rested along the shore—preening and relaxing after being well satisfied by the feeding frenzy. Above the lake, a Brown Pelican and a few gulls hovered in the air, ready to join this massive meal-hunting effort from above. Just as they fly in formation, these cormorants seemed to forage in formation as well—moving as one with remarkable precision. Each time they reached the far edge of the lake, the entire group would turn around or lift off and return to the other side, repeating the process again and again. This mesmerizing back-and-forth choreography continued for more than half an hour in this relatively small lake. Nature never ceases to amaze me.
