A Modern City of History and Legends – Krems an der Donau | 4K | AT

Today I would like to take you on a walk to another city on the banks of the Danube River: the old town of Krems an der Donau which is one of the oldest cities in Austria. Although today Krems is much bigger than it was centuries ago, the old town still have its own unique medieval ambiance. Mentioned for the first time in documents from late 9th, early 10th century, today the old town of Krems is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved medieval architecture. • The Steinertor – or Stainer Gate – dates back to the late 15th century and is one of the oldest surviving structures in Krems. It was originally built as part of the city's defensive walls, which were constructed to protect the town from invasions and attacks during the Middle Ages. The gate is characterized by its robust stone construction and fortified design and consists of two massive round towers flanking a central arched passageway. • The Berger café was the first coffee and pastry shop I came across. I opted for a double cappuccino and some cakes and I can tell you it was as delicious, as the café is elegant. • The Bürgerspitalkirche – or the City Hospital’s Church – dedicated to Saint James and Saint Philip. In 15th century the care facility for old and destitute citizens, which was initially located outside the city, was demolished and was moved inside the city walls along with the church that served it. I wanted to visit it but, although the outer door was open, the inside door was closed so I could just take a glimpse inside, nothing more. • The Simandlbrunnen – or the Fountain of Simandl – named after the Simandl family, who were prominent citizens of Krems during the medieval period. Built in the late 16th century the fountain is one of the symbols of the town and I have found two legends – one tragic and the other one funny. • The Piaristenkirche – or the Piarist Church of Our Lady – is a significant Baroque-style church built between 1717 and 1723 by the Piarist Order, a Catholic religious congregation founded in Spain in the 17th century. This church is a prime example of Baroque architecture in Austria. • The Parish Church of Sankt Veit – or Saint Vitus – is believed to be built in the 13th century. Over the centuries, the church has undergone various renovations and reconstructions, reflecting the changing architectural styles.
